Bhubaneswar, May 5: The naming of the newly inaugurated Jagannath Temple in Digha, West Bengal has sparked widespread controversy, with religious groups and political leaders weighing in on the debate. The core issue revolves around the temple, being referred to as "Jagannath Dham", a title traditionally associated with the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke her silence on the matter, defending the temple’s existence and questioning the strong opposition. She finally addressed the issue, delivering a fiery response. When questioned by the media about the dispute, Banerjee appeared visibly irritated and retorted, saying, "Kali temples and Gurudwaras exist across the country. Shiva temples are also found everywhere. There has never been any issue with them. We respect the Puri temple and Jagannath Dham, so why is there so much anger about the Digha temple?"
Her remarks have further fueled the debate over the temple's naming and significance, adding to the ongoing tension between West Bengal and Odisha.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government is reportedly planning to formally request that the Digha temple not be referred to as "Jagannath Dham".
Further complicating the situation, allegations surfaced that neem wood (Daru) from Puri’s 2015 Nabakalebar rituals was used for idol construction in Digha. Initially, temple servitor Ramakrushna Das Mahapatra asserted that he had transported the wood. However, he later retracted his statement, denying any involvement in the transportation process.
