Key Points
Longstanding tensions over cashew forest auction lead to violence during ritual ceremony in Odisha’s Talabasta village.
Banki, Mar 31: A violent clash between two groups in Banahara Adivasi Sahi, Talabasta village under Banki Police Station in Cuttack district, unfolded late Sunday night.
Reports suggest that the incident stemmed from a longstanding conflict over the auction of a cashew forest. The dispute reignited during a ceremony hosted by one group to commemorate the dashah ritual (the 10th day ritual after someone’s death).
During the feast, members of another group abruptly arrived, sparking a heated argument. This quickly escalated into stone-pelting and arson, leading to the torching of a tent and four houses belonging to one group.
The incident left over 12 people injured, who are currently being treated at Dompada Medical.
In response, authorities have deployed two platoons of police forces to restore order and have detained two suspects for questioning. Investigations are underway as the police work to stabilise the situation.
