Recruitment Scam / Sweeper Job Fraud: Supervisor Hospitalized after Suicide Attempt

Sambalpur, Oct 25: A disturbing case of job fraud has surfaced in Sambalpur, where a woman supervisor allegedly attempted suicide after being mentally distressed by a fake sweeper recruitment scam.
The supervisor, identified as Swarnaprabha Padhy from Chipilima, reportedly consumed phenyl in a suicide attempt and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.
Swarnaprabha was employed as a supervisor with RMX-Pvt Ltd,
a company involved in sanitation services. According to police sources, she was
allegedly manipulated by a gang that promised government sweeper jobs to local
women. Acting on instructions from the accused, Swarnaprabha collected ₹12,000
each from 634 women in her area, promising them employment.

The scam came to light when the promised jobs failed to materialize, and the women who had paid money began protesting outside Swarnaprabha’s residence, demanding refunds. The intense pressure and public humiliation reportedly pushed her into a state of mental breakdown, leading to the suicide attempt.

Police have arrested two individuals linked to the job fraud gang and are investigating further. The scam has sparked outrage in the community, with many demanding strict action against those responsible and justice for the victims.
Authorities are also probing RMX-Pvt Ltd’s role in the incident and whether the company was complicit or unaware of the fraudulent activities carried out under its name.
This incident highlights the growing concern over fake recruitment
scams exploiting vulnerable populations, especially women seeking employment.
The administration has urged citizens to verify job offers and report
suspicious recruitment drives to prevent such tragedies.
