Deogarh, Apr 8: A sudden and unanticipated kalbaishakhi storm wreaked havoc in Deogarh district in Odisha on Tuesday, leaving residents grappling with the destruction caused by a fierce hailstorm.
The Odisha Meteorological Department had issued no prior warning for the region, making the disaster all the more alarming for locals.
Reports suggest that around 5 pm, the storm hit various panchayats in Barakot block, pelting large hailstones that lasted nearly 15 minutes. The worst-hit area was Kala panchayat, where the hailstorm led to significant damage to agricultural fields, homes, and infrastructure.
Farmers bore the brunt of nature’s fury, with extensive losses reported in crops such as watermelon, leafy vegetables, and other seasonal produce. With no warning in place, farmers had no time to prepare, resulting in heavy financial setbacks.
Residents described the scene as terrifying, with powerful winds and hail striking with intensity. While no injuries have been reported, the destruction of crops and property underscores the need for more accurate and timely weather forecasting.
As the affected communities begin assessing damages, concerns grow regarding compensation and recovery efforts. Farmers are expected to seek government intervention for support in rebuilding their livelihoods.
