Suicide Or Foul Play? Investigation Underway In KIIT Student's Death In Odisha

Key Points

Third-year BTech student from KIIT University found dead in Mancheswar area under suspicious circumstances.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 1: In a tragic incident, a third-year BTech student from KIIT University was found dead in the Mancheswar area of Bhubaneswar. The deceased, identified as Arnab Mukherjee, hailed from West Bengal's Banpur district and he was residing in the KIIT hostel.

The incident occurred at around 4 pm on Monday, with initial investigations suggesting suicide as the cause. Security personnel alerted the Mancheswar police about the discovery of the body in an under-construction building.

Initial reports suggest the possibility of suicide, with suspicion of a fall from the building. The circumstances that led Arnab to visit the Mancheswar area remain unclear.

The local police were informed by a security guard, and the body was later sent to Capital Hospital for examination. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death and are probing into potential reasons – whether it’s a case of suicide or is there any foul-play in this? – for this unfortunate event.

Arnab's passing has left his family, friends, and the KIIT community in deep shock and mourning. This incident underscores the importance of mental health awareness and support systems, especially for students.

The local police have assured thorough investigation to uncover the truth and provide justice to Arnab's family. As the investigation continues, the community hopes for answers and closure to this tragic loss.

In the spotlight again

It was the second time in just two months KIIT comes under the spotlight. In February, the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal, a Nepali student at KIIT University, has sparked widespread outrage and protests.

Notably, Prakriti, a third-year BTech student, was found dead on February 16 in her hostel room in what appeared to be a suicide. Allegations of harassment and blackmail by a fellow student had surfaced with claims that the university failed to act on her complaints.

The incident led to protests by Nepali students, who were reportedly mistreated and asked to vacate the campus. The Nepal Embassy intervened, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has held KIIT responsible for negligence, citing gross misconduct in handling the case.

The NHRC has demanded action from the Odisha government and other authorities. This case has raised serious concerns about student safety and institutional accountability.
