Champua, Jul 3: A breach in the Koper Dam, part of the under-construction Kanupur Mega Irrigation Project in Basudevpur block, has triggered serious flood concerns in the Baitarani river basin, especially in Anandapur and Akhuapada.
According to reports, the dam’s spillway gates, which were temporarily sealed with soil to facilitate construction, failed to hold back the rising waters. As a result, floodwaters surged over the dam structure.
Residents in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions from authorities as repair efforts are underway to stabilize the breached section and prevent further damage.
The Kanupur Irrigation Project is a major undertaking by the Odisha government aimed at transforming agricultural productivity and water security in Keonjhar district.
Located across the Baitarani River near Basudevpur village, it is designed to irrigate 29,578 hectares of farmland across five blocks in Keonjhar.
It includes a 3,460-meter-long earth dam with a height of 39.5 meters and features a 213-meter gated spillway and a 77.6 km unlined canal system.
