Bhubaneswar, Jul 4: The Crime Branch investigation into the brutal mob lynching of GRP constable Soumya Ranjan Swain in Balianta has taken a significant turn after a polygraph test on his close friend, Om Prakash Rout, revealed deceptive responses. The findings have raised suspicions of links to suspended IPS officer Dayal Gangwar, already under departmental scrutiny, official sources said on Saturday,

Rout, considered a key witness, was riding with Swain on May 7 when their motorcycle allegedly collided with a scooter carrying two women. One of the women later accused Swain of assault and attempted rape, sparking mob fury that culminated in his lynching. Swain was tied up, beaten mercilessly, and sustained 21 grievous injuries before succumbing to his wounds.

Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra said that suspects are being identified through video footage and eyewitness accounts. During the lie detection test, Rout reportedly displayed nervous behaviour—tightening throat muscles, repeated requests for water, and visible discomfort—signs investigators interpreted as indicators of falsehood.

The probe has also focused on Rout’s association with Satya Bihar Gym, where Swain had expelled him. Investigators are examining whether Rout’s interactions with IPS officers at the gym had any bearing on the murder. Mishra clarified that complainants are generally not subjected to lie detection tests, though he did not rule out future examinations if required.

As of July 2026, as many as 20 individuals have been arrested, including prime accused Chinu alias Ranjit Patra, who was caught on camera striking Swain with a bamboo stick. Three suspects were recently taken into fresh remand for interrogation and cross-verification. Mishra said that departmental inquiries are underway against police personnel present during the incident, with some already suspended. Preliminary charge sheets have been filed, and a complete charge sheet will be submitted within the mandated 90-day period.

The case has triggered widespread outrage, not only for its brutality but also for allegations of exploitation by suspended IPS officer Dayal Gangwar, whom Swain’s family accused of forcing him into domestic servitude. With the Crime Branch tightening its investigation, the coming weeks are expected to shed light on the nexus between suspects and influential figures.
