Flood Fury / Snakebite Tragedy Claims Lives in Odisha Villages

Bhadrak, Aug 25: Snakebite incidents continue to claim lives across Odisha, with two tragic cases reported in recent days.

In Tilaimala village under Tikayatpali police limits, a grandfather and his grandson died after being bitten by a venomous snake while sleeping at home. The victims were identified as Rabi Nayak (68) and Sanjay Nayak (11). Family members rushed them to hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival. Police have begun an investigation at the site.

The incident has heightened fears among locals, as snakebite deaths are rising steadily. Experts warn that timely medical intervention is critical, and victims must be taken to hospitals immediately for anti‑venom treatment.

With heavy rains and flooding caused by a low‑pressure system, reptiles are increasingly entering homes and shelters, putting residents at greater risk.

A similar tragedy was reported recently from Sinapali area of Nuapada district, where a grandfather and grandson died after being bitten by a snake while sleeping at a labour camp.

The deceased were identified as Daitari Tandi and Bharat Tandi, who were working as labourers at the Boladha bridge construction site. Another worker, Tulasi Bagarti, was also bitten and remains in critical condition under treatment at the district hospital.

Locals say frequent flooding has worsened the situation, forcing snakes into human settlements. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, use protective nets, and seek immediate medical help in case of bites.
