Bhubaneswar, Aug 14: The sacred festival of Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, will be celebrated with devotion and grandeur across Odisha on August 15.
Homes and temples, including the revered Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri, are preparing for elaborate rituals, fasting, and midnight celebrations.
According to Smarta tradition, Janmashtami will be observed on August 15, followed by Nanda Utsav on August 16. In contrast, the Vaishnava tradition will celebrate Janmashtami on August 16 and Nanda Utsav on August 17.
This dual observance has led to some confusion among devotees, which has now been clarified by religious scholar Harishankar Mishra.

✨Mishra explained that since Lord Krishna was born at midnight, Smarta followers base the celebration on the evening timing, making August 15 the appropriate day. Vaishnava followers, however, calculate the observance based on sunrise, leading to the celebration on August 16.
As a result, temples and households aligned with Smarta tradition will observe Janmashtami on August 15 with fasting, devotional songs, and midnight puja. Meanwhile, Vaishnava mathas and institutions will celebrate on August 16, with Nanda Utsav following the next day.
Despite the difference in dates, the spirit of devotion remains unified. Markets are bustling with preparations, and devotees are gearing up for night-long vigils, Krishna idol decorations, and cultural programmes.
The Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri will host special rituals and darshan, drawing thousands of devotees. Religious leaders have urged people to focus on the essence of the celebration — devotion, discipline, and joy — regardless of the date.
