Rain Fury / Smart City, Flooded Streets: Bhubaneswar’s Monsoon Woes

Bhubaneswar, Aug 7: Heavy rains have once again exposed the frailties of Bhubaneswar’s urban planning. From Hansapal and Haridaspur to Millennium City and GGP Colony, waterlogging has left residents stranded, raising sharp questions about the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation’s much-touted master plan for a “smart city.”

Waterlogged Capital

The downpour turned arterial roads into streams, with knee-deep water entering homes in several colonies. Residents complained of being virtually imprisoned indoors, as even short commutes became impossible. The situation has triggered widespread public anger against the civic body, with accusations of neglect in drainage infrastructure.

Civic Response

Police Commissioner Suresh Debadatta Singh visited affected colonies, interacted with residents, and supervised the distribution of dry food supplies. Yet, locals argue that such relief measures are temporary and fail to address the structural problems that resurface every monsoon.

Residents’ Voices

Many families who invested their life savings in homes here feel betrayed. “We dreamt of proper roads, drainage, and water supply, but every rain turns our colony into a pond,” lamented a resident of Haridaspur. Similar frustration was echoed in Hansapal and Millennium City, where waterlogging has become routine.

Master Plan Under Scrutiny

The recurring crisis has cast doubt on the efficacy of the BMC’s master plan. While officials promise improvements, residents say assurances have become hollow. The question remains: when will Bhubaneswar’s smart city vision translate into tangible relief for its citizens?
