Bhubaneswar, Apr 25: Following the National Park Status, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Prem Kumar Jha on Friday shared one more interesting update about the Similipal Tiger Reserve.
As per the latest findings, Jha informed that Similipal has around 40 Royal Bengal Tigers, which includes six cubs. Among them, 18 are melanistic (black) tigers--nine male and nine female.
The forest department has identified 13 adult male tigers and 17 tigresses, while the gender of two other adult tigers is yet to be confirmed, he said and added that the forest department has set a target to increase the tiger population to 100 within the next 10 years through focused conservation programs.
Notably, the Odisha government officially granted National Park status to Similipal under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The Odisha's Forest, Environment and Climate Change department took to its X handle and wrote: "Similipal has been officially declared as a National Park today, marking a landmark achievement in Odisha's conservation efforts and reaffirming the state's commitment to preserving its rich biodiversity and natural heritage."
According to the official notification, all statutory procedures from Sections 19 to 26-A of the Act have been completed, and land-related claims within the notified area have been duly settled.
Similipal, known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty, is expected to see a significant increase in tourist footfall.
