Bhubaneswar, Nov 3: In a politically charged social media
post, expelled BJD leader Shreemayee Mishra on Monday stirred controversy by
indirectly targeting Sujata Rout Karttikeyan, wife of influential
bureaucrat-turned-politician VK Pandian, without taking her name. Her cryptic
remarks have triggered speculation about internal power dynamics and succession
planning within the Biju Janata Dal (BJD).
Titanic Metaphor Raises Eyebrows
Mishra likened the current political climate to a “global plan to sink the Titanic,” suggesting a deliberate effort to reshape BJD’s leadership. She hinted that “Shakti Nani”—widely interpreted as Sujata, who previously led the Mission Shakti department during the previous BJD government—is being groomed for a Rajya Sabha seat, potentially altering Odisha’s political equation.
Regional Roots Under Scrutiny
Mishra questioned Sujata’s Odia identity, stating that someone “raised in Jamshedpur’s air and water” may not grasp the cultural pulse of Odisha. “After all, someone who has grown up in the air and water of Jamshedpur—how will she understand the pulse of the Odia people?” she questioned.
She also noted that “Shakti Nani,” once restrained by the
Election Commission, is now poised to re-emerge with a freshly crafted
political identity.

Allegations of Sycophancy and Power Grab
The former BJD leader accused senior party members of flattery, referencing a viral hospital video where leaders were allegedly seen “taking tuition” under Sujata’s influence. She warned that post-Nuapada by-election, plans are underway to crown Sujata as BJD’s successor—potentially sidelining long-serving grassroots workers in favour of an “un-Odia couple.”
Public Sentiment and Political Fallout
Mishra’s post concluded with a provocative question: “Odisha rejected the Tamil son. Will they accept the Tamil son’s wife?” While she refrained from naming Sujata directly, political observers view the post as a bold challenge to the growing influence of VK Pandian and his spouse. The remarks have reignited discussions over BJD’s future leadership and triggered allegations of a succession hijack orchestrated by the Pandian couple.
