Brahmapur, Jul 15: Ganjam district has been shaken by two tragic incidents of self-immolation within just a week, sparking widespread concern and shock among residents.
On Wednesday, a young woman named Rajeshwari from Shanti Nagar’s 5th Line under Berhampur Bada Bazaar Police Station reportedly poured kerosene on herself and attempted suicide.
She was rushed to Cuttack in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries on the way. The reasons behind her extreme decision remain unclear, leaving investigators searching for answers.

This incident comes close on the heels of another shocking case reported on July 9 in Lochapada Basudev Nagar, where a woman named Rajalakshmi Mishra attempted suicide by pouring petrol on herself.
Married just one and a half years ago, Rajalakshmi sustained severe burns covering nearly 70 percent of her body. She was admitted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar but tragically passed away on July 12 after four days of struggle.
Investigations revealed disturbing details in Rajalakshmi’s case. In her dying declaration, she accused her father, Subash Chandra Mishra, of forcing her into immoral relationships and subjecting her to exploitation.

✨She also alleged that he compelled her to terminate a pregnancy. Police later seized her mobile phone, which contained incriminating evidence, including obscene chats. Based on this, Subash Chandra Mishra was arrested.
The back-to-back incidents of self-immolation have created a wave of unease in the city. Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding Rajeshwari’s death while continuing legal proceedings in Rajalakshmi’s case.
