Crackdown on illegal sand trade in Odisha turns violent as mafia retaliates.
Mayurbhanj, Apr 3: In a shocking incident, sand mafia attacked the police in Mayurbhanj district's Rasgovindpur police station area at Denganal Bakabandh.
According to reports, illegal sand smuggling has been rampant for years in the area under Rasgovindpur jurisdiction, with sand transported from Balasore district's Jaleswar and Rajghat to various locations.
The new officer-in-charge, Inspector Padmalochan Panigrahy, intensified action against illegal sand trading. Frequent raids have resulted in the seizure of sand trucks and tractors, but the mafia continued their operations in secret.
Acting on information about three tractors illegally transporting sand at Denganal Bakabandh, police conducted a raid and seized the vehicles.
As one tractor was being taken to the station by police and home guards, the sand mafia ambushed them on bikes, leading to a violent altercation. Amid the chaos, one tractor managed to escape, while another overturned during the scuffle.
Home guard Prashant Patra sustained injuries in the incident. Currently, two illegal sand-loaded tractors remain in police custody.
The police's continued crackdown highlights the ongoing battle against sand smuggling and the risks faced by law enforcement officials.
