Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: Western Odisha came alive with vibrant celebrations on August 1 as people across the region observed Sambalpuri Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Guru Satyanarayan Bohidar, the revered pioneer of Sambalpuri language and literature.

The day was marked by traditional music, dance, and heartfelt tributes to the cultural icon whose legacy continues to shape the identity of Koshal region.

Born on August 1, 1913, in Sonepur, Guru Bohidar is credited with formalizing the Sambalpuri dialect through his literary works and grammar compilations. His contributions elevated the language from a spoken dialect to a recognized cultural force, inspiring generations of writers, artists, and linguists.

Celebrations unfolded across districts like Boudh, Subarnapur, and Sambalpur, where local organizations such as Paschimanchal Ekta Manch and Artists’ Associations organized cultural programs. The day began with floral tributes and rituals honouring Bohidar, followed by folk performances featuring iconic Sambalpuri songs like “Rasarkeli Bo” and “Dalkhai Re.” Traditional instruments like dhol, nisan, and tasa echoed through the streets as dancers and musicians showcased the region’s rich heritage.

In Boudh, devotees offered prayers to Maa Bhairabi before joining in the festivities. In Sonepur, senior officials including the District Superintendent of Police and Additional Collector paid homage to Bohidar’s legacy.
