Sambalpur, Mar 11: Two cow smugglers sustained injuries during a police encounter near City Station in Sambalpur early Tuesday morning.

The exchange of fire took place at around 5.35 am between police and alleged cow smugglers.

According to reports, five rounds were fired by the police, while three rounds were fired by the criminals. Two smugglers sustained gunshot injuries below the knee (left leg of one accused and right leg of the other). They were rushed to Burla Medical College, where they are reported to be out of danger.

Police recovered four fired cartridges, two country-made pistols (7.65 MM), and a black Hyundai Alcazar (Registration No. WB 14 AA 1232) from the spot. The accused, both from Howrah district, West Bengal, were allegedly escorting a Rajasthan-registered truck carrying over 30 cows and bulls.

More details are awaited as further investigation into the incident is underway.
