Urban Development / Sambalpur to Become Smart City! Union Government Approves Major Urban Upgrade

Sambalpur, Aug 29: The city of Sambalpur is set to undergo a major transformation into a smart city, with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approving a ₹103‑crore project.

The initiative, driven by the efforts of local MP and former Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, aims to modernize city management through advanced technology.

Under the project, AI‑enabled cameras will be installed across city streets and intersections to monitor traffic and public safety. An Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) will be established to connect all municipal departments on a single digital platform.

This will allow real‑time monitoring of issues such as damaged roads, drainage, street lighting, waste collection, parks, and public toilets, ensuring faster responses and solutions.

The ICCC will also play a crucial role during festivals and public events, coordinating traffic, security, sanitation, and emergency services. In cases of accidents, fires, or other emergencies, police, fire services, and ambulances will be able to coordinate instantly.

Officials confirmed that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently being prepared, and tendering is expected to begin within six months. Once implemented, Sambalpur will join the ranks of metro cities like Delhi and Mumbai, where similar systems are already operational.

The project is expected to enhance urban governance, improve safety, and make Sambalpur cleaner, more organized, and technologically advanced.
