Sabitri Amavasya Holiday Rescheduled; Odisha Govt Announces New Date

Key Points

The decision was made following consultations with religious authorities, including scholars from Puri’s Mukti Mandap

Bhubaneswar, May 23: The Odisha government has announced a rescheduling of the Sabitri Amavasya holiday, shifting it from May 27 to May 26, 2025.

The decision was made following consultations with religious authorities, including scholars from Puri’s Mukti Mandap, ensuring the festival aligns with its accurate observance date.

As per the revised holiday list, all state government offices will now remain open on May 27, since it is no longer designated as a holiday. The change comes as part of efforts to synchronize official holidays with traditional Hindu observances.

Sabitri Amavasya holds immense cultural and religious significance for married Hindu women, who observe a day-long fast and pray for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. The festival is inspired by the legendary devotion of Sabitri, a mythological figure from the Mahabharata, who is believed to have saved her husband from death through unwavering determination and prayer.

The Odisha government’s decision aims to uphold religious customs while ensuring seamless administrative functioning.

Citizens are advised to take note of the revised holiday date for any necessary adjustments to their plans.
