Rourkela, Aug 3: In a major crackdown, Rourkela police busted a high-profile sex racket operating from a rented house in the Civil Town CP area under Raghunathpali police limits. The raid led to the arrest of the alleged kingpin, described as the “queen bee,” along with the mastermind behind the operation. Two young women forced into sex work were rescued during the operation, police said on Monday.

Police seized cash and objectionable materials from the premises, exposing the scale of the illegal trade. According to officials, the racket had been luring women from economically weaker backgrounds, including tribal girls and minors, into the flesh trade with promises of quick money.

The investigation revealed disturbing details of human trafficking across districts and states. In one case, a young woman from Rourkela was allegedly trafficked to Madhya Pradesh on June 4 and sold for Rs2 lakh. She managed to escape and later lodged a complaint at the Plant Site police station, bringing to light the extent of the trafficking network.

Authorities suspect that several women were being trafficked outside Odisha by local agents who exploited their financial vulnerability. The racket reportedly generated huge profits, with traffickers earning lakhs of rupees by pushing victims into the trade.

Social activists and intellectuals in Rourkela have expressed concern that the steel city is turning into a hub of human trafficking. They have urged stricter vigilance and stronger enforcement to dismantle such networks, which prey on women and minors.

Meanwhile, the local police intensified investigations to trace other members of the racket and identify victims who may still be trapped. Officials assured that efforts are being made to strengthen awareness campaigns and community vigilance to curb trafficking and protect vulnerable women.

The bust has once again highlighted the urgent need for coordinated action against trafficking and sex rackets, which continue to exploit poverty and desperation for profit.
