Flood Fury / River Embankment Breaches Worsen Odisha Flood Misery, Politics Heats Up

Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: Flood misery in Odisha has been compounded by breaches in river embankments across several districts, exposing thousands of families to fresh waves of inundation and sparking political debate over preparedness and accountability.

According to official reports, more than 10 breaches have been recorded in different rivers, with Jajpur district alone witnessing seven. The fragile embankments gave way under the pressure of swollen rivers, leaving villages marooned and livelihoods devastated. In Bari block of Jajpur, the Brahmani river created three major breaches — 300 feet at Banksahi, 100 feet at Arual, and another 100 feet at Chandanpur. The Kharsrota river added two breaches at Tikatpada and Bandhadihi, while the Baitarani’s branch at Kani saw two more.

The impact has been severe; three blocks and over 20 panchayats in Jajpur are widely affected. In Keonjhar, a 50-foot breach on the Baitarani at Anandpur Ring Road inundated three municipal wards. Balasore too reported a breach on the Jalaka river at Basta, flooding 20 panchayats. Senior engineers of the Water Resources Department admitted that unusually heavy rainfall this season has aggravated the situation, leading to multiple breaches.

The crisis has triggered sharp political reactions. BJD leader Pramila Mallik alleged that “patrolling was not done properly during the floods and vulnerable points were left unprotected.” BJP MP Ravi Narayan Behera countered that the scale of rainfall and flooding was unprecedented, stressing that embankments would be strengthened with modern technology.

While floodwater has begun to recede, the breaches have worsened the plight of affected communities. The Water Resources Department said ssured that all breaches will be repaired within the next seven days. Yet, questions linger: Were the embankments inherently weak? Was timely maintenance neglected? Who bears responsibility for the lapses?

As Odisha grapples with the aftermath, the breaches stand as stark reminders of the state’s vulnerability to monsoon fury and the urgent need for resilient infrastructure.
