Key Points
Thongojuri village in remote Odisha district continues to face neglect, with residents demanding a school, Anganwadi centre, piped drinking water, and road connectivity.
Kantabanji/Balangir, May 20: Despite decades of independence, several remote villages in Odisha continue to struggle for basic amenities. One such example is Thongojuri village under Kameimundagram Gram Panchayat in Turekla block of Balangir district, where residents say essential facilities such as a concrete road, an Anganwadi centre, safe drinking water, and a government school remain out of reach.
Thongojuri, a long‑established settlement located in a remote area, faces severe challenges in education and healthcare services. Villagers allege that the absence of a primary school and an Anganwadi centre has created significant difficulties for children and families. Young students are forced to depend on a school in nearby Pandren village for primary education, travelling daily under difficult conditions.
The drinking water situation is equally concerning. Although several tube wells have been installed, residents claim the water contains fluoride, making it unsafe for regular consumption. Villagers have demanded the construction of a piped drinking water supply project to ensure safe water reaches every household.

Residents, including Pitambar Bag and Raghu Bag, expressed frustration over the continued neglect of the village and urged authorities to address their longstanding concerns. “We have been demanding basic facilities for years, but nothing has changed,” one villager said.
The lack of proper road connectivity remains another major challenge. Without a concrete road, villagers struggle with transportation, especially during the rainy season when mud paths become unusable. This has further isolated the community from healthcare, education, and livelihood opportunities.
Thongojuri’s plight highlights the real picture in remote areas. Residents hope that renewed attention from district authorities will finally bring long‑awaited infrastructure to their village, ensuring access to education, safe drinking water, and better connectivity.
