Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: Odisha remembers and paid tributes to two valiant sons, Veer Surendra Sai on his 215th birth anniversary and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on his 125th birth anniversary today.

Sai, born on January 23, 1809 in Khanda Zamidari family in Sambalpur, led a special army against the British Government. He later joined with all his forces in the Sepoy Revolution in 1857. Inspired by his call, thousands of youths joined freedom struggle and fought against the misrule of the British Government. Though he was jailed, his forces rescued him playing tricks with British forces. Freedom struggle had already peaked under his leadership by the time of his death in 1884.

Born on January 23, 1897 into the laps of Pravabati Devi and Janakinath Bose at Odia Bazaar in historic Cuttack city, Subhas Chandra Bose did his schooling in Cuttack. He studied BA in Calcutta University and higher education in the Cambridge University.

He had a strong inclination that Freedom can be achieved by defeating the British in fight. After resigning as president, Indian National Congress, he went to Singapore and formed the Azad Hind Fauj there on October 21, 1943. His Azad Hind Fauz entered India territory through Burma on March 18, 1944. Due to his heroic acts against the British misrule, he has sat as Netaji in every Indian’s heart. 

To remember his contributions in freedom struggle, the Modi Government is observing his birthday as Parakram Divas.
