Key Points
The Indian Meteorological Department warns of thunderstorms, hailstorms, and heavy rain under Kalbaisakhi conditions in Odisha.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 28: Odisha is bracing for Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester/summer storm) rains, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a combination of orange and yellow alerts for the state.
Triggered by the influence of western disturbances, the severe weather conditions are predicted to persist till May 2. Citizens across 30 districts are advised to prepare for potential thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall.
IMD has identified nine districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, and Koraput, under the orange alert category due to the likelihood of intense rainfall, accompanied by strong winds and hailstorms. The remaining 21 districts are under a yellow alert, signifying moderate weather conditions.
The department's forecast also indicates a potential dip in day temperatures by 3–5 degrees Celsius across the state, providing much-needed respite from the soaring summer heat.
However, the adverse weather conditions pose risks of disruptions to daily life, including damage to standing crops and infrastructure.
Citizens have been urged to remain cautious and avoid outdoor activities during the peak hours of thunderstorms. The IMD continues to monitor the situation and provide updates to ensure public safety during this unpredictable weather phase.
