The incident occurred in the Bidyanagar area of Rayagada, involving Jagannath Swamy (53). He had been undergoing treatment for the last seven days at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam, where he was diagnosed with liver failure and placed on ventilator support with oxygen assistance, according to family members.
On Saturday evening, doctors reportedly removed him from the ventilator and advised the family to take him home, stating that his condition had reached the final stage and that he was unlikely to survive for more than an hour. Following the advice, the family brought Swamy back to Rayagada around midnight.
As news spread, local residents gathered at his house, where it was found that Swamy was still alive even a day after the discharge. Though he was unable to speak, his vital signs and bodily movements were observed to be active, eyewitnesses said.
The family said more than Rs 4 lakh had already been spent on treatment under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, apart from additional personal expenses. Local residents alleged irresponsible medical advice and lapses in treatment, holding the hospital accountable for the situation.
