Rare Blue Whale Carcass Washes Ashore at Rajnagar Coast
Rare Marine Giant Discovered

Key Points

A rare blue whale carcass was discovered near the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Rajnagar, Kendrapara. The massive whale, estimated to be 4–5 years old and measuring about 33 feet, had already partially decomposed, suggesting it had been dead for several days.
Rajnagar, Apr 10: In a rare and significant marine discovery, a blue whale carcass was found along the Rajnagar coast, close to the Madeli mouth of the Gahirmatha Marine Sanctuary in Kendrapara district, Odisha. The discovery has drawn attention from marine experts and conservationists, given the ecological importance of the region.

According to officials, the whale is estimated to be around 4 to 5 years old and measured approximately 33 feet in length. The carcass was spotted washed ashore, but nearly half of its body had already decomposed, suggesting that the whale had been dead for several days before being discovered.

Preliminary investigations by forest and marine authorities indicate that the whale’s death may have been caused by a collision with a trawler motor or other maritime activity. However, the exact cause is yet to be confirmed, and further assessments are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The discovery has raised concerns among conservationists, as the waters near Gahirmatha are ecologically sensitive and globally recognised for their rich marine biodiversity. The sanctuary is particularly famous as one of the largest nesting grounds for Olive Ridley turtles, making it a critical zone for marine life protection.

Officials from the Forest Department have initiated a detailed inquiry, while marine biologists emphasize the need for stricter monitoring of maritime activities in the area. The incident highlights the vulnerability of large marine mammals to human-induced threats, including vessel strikes and fishing operations.

The sighting of a blue whale carcass in Odisha is extremely rare, underscoring both the presence of diverse marine species in the Bay of Bengal and the urgent need for conservation measures. As investigations continue, the event serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between human activity and marine ecosystems.
