Rourkela, Dec 8: A Class-10 student from Rajgangpur in Sundargarh district, who had suffered critical burn injuries after setting herself on fire, died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment at the Ispat General Hospital (IGH) in Rourkela, a source said.
Despite intensive medical care, doctors said her vital organs -- including her lungs, heart and kidneys -- had stopped responding due to over 90% burn injuries.
According to the source, the girl had poured kerosene on herself and attempted self-immolation in the Lanjiberna area under Rajgangpur police limits after being repeatedly harassed by a 25-year-old man. She was rescued and shifted to IGH, where she remained in the burn ward battling for life. The incident sent shockwaves across the local community, and villagers plunged into grief after news of her death broke on Monday.
On Sunday, Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling had visited the hospital, met the victim and her family, and assured that she would be shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar or AIIMS Delhi if required. However, she succumbed to her injuries before further transfer could be arranged.
Sundargarh Police confirmed that the accused has been arrested and remanded to jail. Investigators are now examining whether more individuals were involved in the sustained harassment that reportedly drove the minor to take the extreme step. “We are conducting a detailed inquiry to identify all those linked to the case,” officials said.
