Rain Returns to Odisha as Low-Pressure System Moves Over Chhattisgarh

Key Points

IMD warns of widespread rainfall across Odisha due to a low-pressure system over Chhattisgarh.

A new system may form over the Bay of Bengal and northern Odisha coast around September 1.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected in southern and coastal districts.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a statewide rainfall alert for Odisha as a low-pressure system currently hovers over central Chhattisgarh and its surrounding regions.

The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above sea level, influencing weather patterns across southern and coastal Odisha.

According to IMD scientist Sarat Sahoo, the system is expected to bring light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in many districts over the next three days. Some areas may experience heavy downpours, prompting caution from local authorities.

The IMD has also forecast the formation of another cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the northern Odisha coast around September 1, which could prolong the wet spell.

The current low-pressure system, which earlier formed over southern Odisha, has moved west-northwestward and weakened slightly as of 5:30 am on Thursday. Despite its weakening, the system continues to impact weather conditions, with rainfall expected to persist across the state for the next 72 hours.

Districts such as Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal are likely to receive intense rainfall, while coastal regions including Puri, Ganjam, and Khordha may witness thunderstorms and gusty winds. The IMD has issued yellow and orange warnings for several districts, urging residents to stay alert and avoid waterlogged areas.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to moderate to rough conditions along the Odisha coast and the Bay of Bengal.
