Rain May Shift PM Modi’s Berhampur Visit to Jharsuguda

Key Points

PM Modi’s September 27 visit may shift from Berhampur to Jharsuguda due to heavy rain forecast.

Officials have inspected Amulipali Ground in Jharsuguda as an alternative venue.

Final decision pending from PMO; preparations in Berhampur temporarily halted.

Bhubaneswar, Sep 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Berhampur on September 27 may be relocated to Jharsuguda due to the forecast of heavy rainfall in coastal Odisha.

The visit was planned as part of the national-level “Seva Parv” celebrations, where the Prime Minister was expected to inaugurate and lay foundation stones for several key development projects across the state.

Odisha Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari confirmed that the administration is considering shifting the venue, citing the impact of a low-pressure system expected to bring widespread rain and storms starting September 25. As Berhampur lies in a vulnerable coastal zone, officials fear logistical disruptions and safety concerns.

Authorities have identified Amulipali Ground in Jharsuguda as a possible alternative venue. The district Collector and Superintendent of Police have already inspected the site and submitted a preliminary report to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). A final decision is awaited.

Preparations in Berhampur, including tent installations at Rangeilunda, have been paused amid uncertainty. The Director General of Police and Chief Secretary have reviewed the situation, and contingency plans are being activated.

The Prime Minister’s visit is expected to draw large crowds and media attention, making the choice of venue critical for both security and public engagement. If relocated, Jharsuguda will host the event with full administrative support and revised logistics.

This marks a rare instance where weather has prompted a last-minute reconsideration of a high-profile national event.
