Bhubaneswar, Oct 20: As Diwali preparations light up the streets of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, unexpected rain showers have cast a shadow over the festive mood. A sudden spell of rain, triggered by a low-pressure system forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal, has left firecracker shops drenched and traders anxious.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD),
Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall over the next five to
seven days. The low-pressure area is expected to intensify into a depression
within 48 hours, potentially affecting the twin cities during the peak of
Diwali festivities.

In Cuttack, residents expressed disappointment as lightning
and thunder accompanied the showers, dampening the festive buzz. “We stocked up for Diwali, but the sudden rain has kept
customers away,” said Ramesh Sahu, a local firecracker shop owner near
Badambadi.
Meawhile, the Odisha government has urged citizens to celebrate Diwali
safely, emphasizing caution with firecrackers and adherence to weather
advisories. Authorities advised using eco-friendly options and prioritizing
public safety amid forecasts of rain and thunderstorms across several districts
during the festival.
