Argus News - Rahul Banerjee's Wife Files FIR In Odisha Alleging Conspiracy In Actor's Drowning Death

Balasore, Apr 5: The death of Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee took a fresh turn, with his wife Priyanka Sarkar filing an FIR at Talsari Marine Police Station in Odisha’s Balasore district, alleging possible conspiracy behind the incident.

Priyanka was accompanied by prominent Bengali actors, including Prosenjit Chatterjee, Jisshu Sengupta and Rituparna Sengupta, who were present at the police station during the filing of the FIR on Saturday.

According to our source from the ground, the FIR names five individuals, with the family expressing suspicion over the circumstances leading to Rahul’s death.

Incident During Shoot Raises Questions
Rahul Banerjee, 42, died on March 29 while shooting for a television project at Talsari beach. As per initial information, he entered the sea during the shoot when the tide was rising and was swept away. Technicians later pulled him out and he was rushed to a hospital in Digha, where doctors declared him dead.

An unnatural death case was registered at Digha Marine Police Station.

‘We Did Not Get Satisfactory Answers’
Addressing the media earlier, Prosenjit Chatterjee said, “We had hoped for an answer that would address our concerns. Since that did not happen, we decided to file an FIR.”

He added, “It is impossible to bring back someone who has passed away. We were all in shock… Now, we will try our best to find out the real reason behind his death.”

Actor Shantilal Mukherjee said, “After consulting lawyers, we decided to file a complaint demanding a full and impartial investigation.”

Questions Over Production Company’s Version
Members of the film fraternity alleged that the production company’s explanation was inadequate and raised several unanswered questions, particularly regarding safety protocols and accountability during the shoot. They criticised the company’s spokesperson, Leena Gangopadhyay, for not meeting Rahul Banerjee’s family following his death.


Rahul Banerjee is survived by his mother, wife -- actor Priyanka Sarkar -- and their 13‑year‑old son.

Known for his character roles, Rahul gained recognition with ‘Chirodini Tumi Je Amar’ (2008) and went on to appear in films such as ‘Tumi Asbe Bole’ (2014), ‘Zulfiqar’ (2016), ‘Byomkesh Gotro’ (2018), ‘Biday Byomkesh’ (2018) and ‘The Academy of Fine Arts’ (2025). He was also a familiar face on television, appearing in serials such as ‘Hargouri Pice Hotel’ and ‘Mohona’.
