Puri, Jun 29: The Odisha government has announced a financial support of Rs 25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee, who died in the stampede near the Gundicha Temple in Puri yesterday.
In addition, a high-level probe has been ordered to investigate the circumstances that led to the mishap.
The announcement came after Chief Minister Mohan Majhi’s public apology, where he described the incident as “heartbreaking” and “unforgivable.”
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Odisha government initiated swift administrative action and transferred two top district officials.
While Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal were transferred, the government has placed Chanchal Rana as the new Collector of Puri, and Pinak Mishra as the new SP.
In addition, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been suspended for alleged negligence in duty.
