Bhubaneswar, Dec 31: In a significant development for urban governance in Odisha, Puri Municipality has officially been upgraded to the status of Puri Municipal Corporation. The formal notification was issued on Wednesday, following Chief Minister’s announcement on July 3, 2025.
Expansion of Urban Governance
Alongside Puri’s elevation, four towns—Loisingha, Chandikhole, Yashipur, and Basta—have been declared as Notified Area Councils (NACs). This move is expected to strengthen civic administration and improve delivery of services in these growing urban centres.
Berhampur Corporation Area Enlarged
The government also announced the expansion of Berhampur Municipal Corporation’s jurisdiction, bringing more areas under its fold. Officials said the step was aimed at ensuring better infrastructure, planning, and service delivery in the fast-growing southern Odisha city.

Significance of Puri’s Upgrade
Puri, globally renowned for the Jagannath Temple and the annual Rath Yatra, has long been a hub of tourism and pilgrimage. The upgradation to a Municipal Corporation is expected to enhance civic facilities, improve urban infrastructure, and strengthen the city’s capacity to manage large-scale events and growing population demands.
