Puri, July 4: In a landmark announcement, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday declared that Puri Municipality will be upgraded to a Municipal Corporation, marking a significant step in the city’s urban development.

Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister cited the municipality’s inability to meet the growing demands of residents and the surge in tourist footfall.

“Puri, one of India’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations and home to the iconic Jagannath Temple, has witnessed exponential growth in both population and infrastructure needs. The Chief Minister emphasized that the current municipal framework is inadequate to deliver essential civic amenities, prompting the government to initiate the transition to a Municipal Corporation.

The move is expected to bring enhanced administrative capabilities, increased funding, and better urban planning to the city. With this upgrade, Puri will gain access to more robust governance mechanisms, improved sanitation, water supply, and waste management systems—critical for a city that hosts millions of devotees annually during events like the Rath Yatra.

CM Majhi assured that the process to formalize the corporation status will begin immediately, with necessary legislative and administrative steps underway. The announcement has been welcomed by local residents and urban planners, who see it as a long-overdue recognition of Puri’s evolving civic landscape.
