Puri, Jun 23: In a landmark move to preserve the sanctity and purity of the sacred Mahaprasad, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has decided to eliminate chemically treated rice from temple offerings.
For the first time, organic rice—branded as Amruta Anna—will be used in preparing Kotha Bhoga for Lord Jagannath at the Adapa Mandap during the Rath Yatra.
This year, devotees will witness a spiritual and sustainable shift as Kalajira, a premium organic rice variety with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, will be used in the daily preparation of Mahaprasad.
The rice is being sourced from Koraput-based Pragati Organisation, which submitted six organic rice samples including Basubhoga, Kalajira, Malli, Basanti Chudi, Haladi Chudi, and Birodhan. After thorough testing, Kalajira was selected for its quality and heritage value.
Approximately 80 kilograms of rice are used daily for Mahaprasad and other offerings like pitha. Initially, the organic rice will be used for five days at the Adapa Mandap, with plans to extend its use to the Bhoga Mandap as well.
The initiative is part of the broader Amruta Anna project, which aims to uphold the dignity and spiritual significance of Mahaprasad while promoting organic farming.
In addition to rice, other ingredients such as pulses, ginger, and turmeric—grown using organic methods—will also be incorporated into the temple kitchen.
The Mahaprasad will continue to be available to devotees at affordable prices, ensuring accessibility while maintaining its sacred essence.
