Ensures privacy, hygiene, and support for mothers and infants.

Initiative praised by both pilgrims and temple servitors.

Puri, Sep 1: In a landmark move towards inclusive and compassionate infrastructure, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has inaugurated a dedicated breastfeeding room within the temple premises in Puri.

This initiative is aimed at supporting lactating mothers who visit the temple with their infants, especially those dependent on breastfeeding.

Every day, thousands of devotees throng the 12th-century shrine, many of whom are mothers carrying young children. Recognizing the need for a safe, private, and hygienic space, the temple administration has made this facility operational starting Monday — September 1.

The breastfeeding room is located near the temple’s administrative branch office and is designed to offer comfort and dignity to nursing mothers.

A female assistant has been appointed to manage the facility, ensuring smooth access and support for mothers. The decision has been widely welcomed by both devotees and servitors, who see it as a thoughtful step toward enhancing the temple experience for women.

This initiative follows long-standing demands from devotees and social activists, and aligns with broader efforts by the Odisha government to normalize breastfeeding in public spaces and provide essential amenities for women. Earlier, similar facilities were announced for railway stations, bus stands, and shopping malls.

SJTA Chief Administrator Arabinda Kumar Padhee has directed officials to prioritize the project and ensure the room is well-equipped to meet the needs of mothers and infants.

The move is expected to benefit thousands of women devotees and set a precedent for other religious and public institutions across the country.
