Rural Connectivity / Pregnant Woman Carried on Cot for 6 km in Odisha's Kandhamal District Due to Lack of Motorable Road

Daringbadi, Sep 29: A pregnant woman was carried on a cot for around 6 km through hilly terrain, forest areas and streams after a vehicle could not reach her village due to the lack of a motorable road in Odisha's Kandhamal district, a source said on Tuesday.

The incident was reported from Nuapadar village under Gumikia panchayat in Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district.

Villagers Carry Woman Through Difficult Terrain
According to the source, a woman from the village, identified as Nalini Mallick, had gone on foot to nearby Gudripanga village on Monday to attend a post-death ritual. While she was on her way, she developed sudden abdominal pain, fell down and became unwell.

As there is no proper road connecting the village to medical facilities and the condition of the village road is poor, no vehicle could reach the area, the source informed.

Her family members and other villagers then carried her on a cot from Nuapadar through Badepanga and Kanjumaha, crossing rivers, streams and hilly terrain. After carrying her for around 6 km, they reached Badahakia village.

From there, she was taken in an auto-rickshaw to the Baliguda Sub-Divisional Hospital for treatment.

The woman is reportedly six months pregnant, the source informed.

Village Still Without A Pucca Road
Around 40 families, comprising more than 200 people, live in Nuapadar village. However, an all-weather motorable road has not yet been constructed to the village.

Such incidents are reportedly common in the area due to the lack of road connectivity. There have also been instances where bodies were carried to the village on cots, the source said.
