Bhubaneswar, Feb 11: To check marital discords and divorce cases, the Odisha government on Tuesday said Pre-Marital Mental Health Counseling Centres would be set up across the State.


Expressing concern over the rising divorse cases, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said, "Pre-Marital Mental Health Counseling Centres will bring the family together. The bride and bridegroom will go to the counseling centers before the wedding. Efforts will be made to improve their mental health. The centre will work towards preventing divorce and understanding marriage properly."


Parida said the centers will be named Mother's Court or "Maa' ra Chhata".


The Deputy Chief Minister stated this at the 32nd foundation day of the National Commission for Women graced by NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar.

"There are a lot of divorces in society. It affects both men and women psychologically. In each case, two families are disturbed. It also affects society. In many cases, counseling settle issues before divorce. Therefore, the premarital mental health counseling that the government has thought of must teach many couples a sense of responsibility and adjustment after marriage. They will get to know each other. Cases of divorce will be lessened," said social workers while hailing the government's decision.


People parting ways from marital life constitute 0.84 percent of the country's population. This is 0.88 percent in Odisha. While the cases of divorce are on the rise in the State, the Premarital Mental Health Counseling Centres will certainly play a big role in settling such issues.
