Odisha Politics / Political Heat Rises in Odisha as BJP, BJD and Congress Launch Mass Outreach Drives

Key Points
Bhubaneswar, Oct 2: With the next round of panchayat elections still some distance away, Odisha's three major political parties, the BJP, BJD and Congress, have launched parallel grassroots outreach campaigns, using Gandhi Jayanti as a platform to expand their reach and sharpen their political messaging.
The simultaneous launch of service initiatives, padayatras and mass-contact campaigns signals the beginning of an early political contest that is expected to intensify in the months ahead.
What appears to be a series of commemorative activities has evolved into a political contest for visibility, public engagement and organisational strength. From service campaigns and padayatras to democracy-themed protests, all three major parties have stepped into the field with distinct messages but a common objective: connecting directly with voters.

✨The ruling BJP has intensified its ongoing Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, focusing on cleanliness drives, activities in schools and anganwadi centres, and direct public engagement. The party is also preparing to launch the Viksit Sankalp Yatra across booths in the State.
Through street plays and public interactions, BJP leaders aim to highlight Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governance initiatives and India’s transformation under his leadership. The party has also sought to expand its connect with both youth and senior citizens, viewing them as crucial voter groups in the coming electoral cycle.
BJD’s Month-Long March
The opposition BJD has launched its month-long Janasampark Padayatra, beginning on Gandhi Jayanti and scheduled to continue until November 2. Party president Naveen Patnaik flagged off the campaign in Bhubaneswar, setting the tone for similar programmes across organisational districts, blocks, municipalities and urban local bodies.
The BJD intends to highlight public grievances, question the BJP government’s performance and remind voters of what it describes as unfulfilled promises.
Congress Takes Democracy Theme
Congress, meanwhile, has launched its week-long Ganatantra Banchaao Saptaha campaign from October 2 to 8. The programme includes district-level padayatras, tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, leaflet distribution and public meetings.
The party has planned large gatherings on October 6 and has
called for an Odisha bandh on October 8, seeking to mobilise public opinion
around democratic issues and governance concerns.

Battle for the Narrative
As all three parties expand their presence at the grassroots level, Odisha’s political landscape is witnessing an early electoral churn. Whether it is the BJP’s message of service, the BJD’s padayatra-led outreach, or the Congress’s democracy campaign, the coming weeks will test which narrative resonates most strongly with voters across the State. The growing political activity also underlines the importance parties are attaching to village-level mobilisation, which is likely to play a decisive role in shaping the electoral discourse ahead of the panchayat polls.
