PM Modi Cavalcade Cut / PM Modi’s EV Push: How the Strait of Hormuz Crisis Accelerated India's EV Surge

Key Points
Bhubaneswar: In a move that sent shockwaves through the national capital today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi slashed his official cavalcade by 50%, swapping gas-guzzling armored SUVs for sleek electric counterparts. "The era of the internal combustion engine is sunsetting," the PM noted, urging citizens to pivot toward a greener future.
The move isn't just about optics—it's a strategic response to a global energy chokehold.
The Geopolitical Catalyst
The ongoing US-Iran conflict and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz had an impact on fossil fuels prices across the globe. The prices of petro fuels surged greatly worldwide. Though Indian fuel prices have been quite insulated from the external shock, the unending crisis may impact in months to come.
India’s Response to Crisis Challenge
With a primary oil artery blocked, India faced an existential energy crisis. However, instead of grinding to a halt, the nation pivoted. Between January and mid-May 2026, India recorded a staggering 8,33,693 pure EV sales, with more than half of those occurring since the war began.
The 2026 Monthly Surge
The numbers tell a story of a nation in a hurry to decouple from global oil volatility.
· January 2026 – 1,68,771 units
· February 2026 – 1,52,479 units
· March 2026 – 2,39,890 units
· April 2026 – 2,06,158 units
· May (1 – 11) 2026 – 66,395 units
This momentum is historic.
For perspective, the entire year of 2025 saw 15,65,623 EV sales. At the current trajectory, 2026 is set to shatter all records, with overall EV penetration in India climbing by 5% this year alone.
State-Wise Performance: The Leaders
While the capital sets the policy, the states are driving the volume. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are locked in a neck-and-neck race for the top spot.

✨· Madhya Pradesh: 46,000 units
· Odisha: 36,000 units
· Kerala: 34,000 units
· Rajasthan: 32,000 units
· Bihar: 31,000 units
The Odisha Case: A Rising Star
Odisha has emerged as a dark horse in the EV race. In April 2026, the state secured the 8th spot nationally with 11,313 units sold, capturing a 4.7% market share. Interestingly, EV penetration in Odisha stands at 5.8%, higher than the national average, proving that the coastal state is embracing the quiet roar of electric motors.
The Infrastructure Bottleneck
The "Range Anxiety" ghost still haunts the highway. While sales are booming, the infrastructure is playing catch-up.
The 2030 Target: The government aims for 8 crore EVs on the road by 2030. To support this, India requires 13.2 lakh public charging stations and a total (public + private) network of 25–30 lakh.
To bridge this gap, India must install 4 lakh stations annually. The current landscape remains uneven:
· Karnataka: Leads with 5,700 public stations.
· Andhra Pradesh: Trails at the bottom of the top 10 with 1,000+.
· Odisha: Faces a steep climb with only 194 stations currently active.
Upcoming Rollouts
· The government has greenlit a massive infrastructure blitz to keep the wheels turning:
· Maharashtra: 4,800 new stations
· Karnataka: 2,900 new stations
· Punjab: 900 new stations
· Rest of India: 5,000+ stations
As the smoke
clears over the Strait of Hormuz, India’s path forward seems increasingly
clear: the future isn't just electric—it's already here.
