Cuttack, Aug 27: A section of Platform roof collapsed at Cuttack Railway Station in Odisha on Wednesday afternoon, triggering panic among passengers. The incident took place at the under-construction work near Platform No 1 at the railway station, officials said.

Eyewitnesses said a loud cracking sound before a section of the platform gave way, partially falling onto the railway line. It was immediately unknown whether any passengers were trapped beneath the rubble, as rescue teams from the railway department swiftly launched an operation to assess the damage and search for potential victims.

Railway officials have cordoned off the affected area and suspended train movement on the impacted track.

The officials also initiated an inquiry into the structural failure, aiming to determine the cause and prevent future incidents.

Passengers at the station expressed shock and concern, with many calling for urgent safety audits across major railway stations. “It could have been a major tragedy if the platform had been crowded,” said one commuter.

This incident comes amid growing calls for modernization and maintenance of railway infrastructure across India.
