Plastic Menace In Silk City: 40 Kg Waste Found In Stray Cow’s Stomach, Removed After 3-Hour Surgery

Berhampur, Sep 9: Around 40 Kg of plastic waste was removed from the stomach of a stray cow at a government-run hospital in Odisha's Ganjam district.

Reportedly, the condition of the stray cow is stable, and will stay in the hospital for about a week, said Chief District Veterinary Officer (CDVO) of Ganjam, Anjan Kumar Das.

He further stated that " the operation took around 3 hours."

The cow was shifted from the Hilpatna area to the hospital in an animal ambulance on Sunday, after its health condition deteriorated.

Environmental activist Sudhir Rout said '' The incident has revealed the use of polythene and other plastic materials in silk cities, despite the ban on their use in transport and manufacture.''

Rout has been actively campaigning against plastic use in the region.

He urged the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) to strictly enforce the rules against plastic usage to prevent similar incidents.

This is not the first such case. In 2023, the Veterinarians from the same hospital had surgically removed 30 Kg of plastic waste from another stray cow's stomach.
