Pioneering Water Governance: Odisha Embraces AI for a Sustainable Future

Bhubaneswar, June 13: A special workshop was held today in Bhubaneswar titled “Introduction of Best Practices in Data Management and Digitization for Water Resource Monitoring using AI (Artificial Intelligence)”. It was organized by the State Water Informatics Centre (SWIC) and the Department of Water Resources (DoWR), Odisha, in partnership with IIT Bhubaneswar’s Research and Entrepreneurship Park.
Smt. Anu Garg, IAS, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary, DoWR,Govt.of Odisha graced the occassion as Chief Guest in this workshop. In her speech, she talked about how using digital tools, good data, and AI can help make the Water Resources Department more transparent and efficient. She praised the event for encouraging teamwork and innovation across departments.
Among others Dr. Chandra Sekhar Padhi,Engineer-in-Chief,Water Resources,Er. Krushna Chandra Mohanty, Director of SWIC,Dr. Debi Prosad Dogra, Head of Computer Science at IIT Bhubaneswar and Dr. Arjamadutta Sarangi, Director of the Indian Institute of Water Management spoke on the occassion and highlighted how technologies like AI, data analytics, and digital systems can greatly improve how we manage water resources.
The workshop lasted through four sessions which brought together experts, government officials, and people from different sectors. The main goal was to explore how AI can help in managing water resources in a smarter and more sustainable way.Among the Key sessions Dr. Debi Dogra emphasized on the Basics of AI and data analytics and what is the use of AI in Water Resource Management.After which Dr. Sandip Patnaik highlighted on the use of AI IN predicting rainfall.Dr.Ram Prasad Padhy briefed on Deep learning for water management along with that Dr. Meenu Ramadas. focussed on Digital tools in water governance.

Many government staff and experts attended and got practical experience with AI tools. This teamwork is expected to bring big improvements in how Odisha manages its water and could become a model for other government projects.
