Pattachitra Artists Receive GI Certification

Key Points

Four artists from Odisha received GI Part-B certificates for unique Pattachitra styles

Certification boosts market value and global visibility of traditional scroll paintings

Bhubaneswar, Sept 10: In a proud moment for Odisha’s cultural heritage, four Pattachitra artists from the state have been awarded the Part-B Geographical Indication (GI) certification. This recognition not only honours their unique craftsmanship but also opens new avenues for international exposure and economic growth.

Artists Behind Masterpieces

Among the recipients are young artists Sushanta Kumar Maharana and Sachikanta Sahu from Raghurajpur village in Puri district, known for its rich artistic legacy. Their dedication to reviving and modernizing Pattachitra has brought pride to their community. Two others are Bijaya Kumar Mahapatra from Dandasahi near Chandapur and Saudamini Swain from Nimapada of the same district whose distinctive styles have earned them national acclaim.

Certification After Years of Effort

The artists had reportedly applied for GI certification three years ago. With support from GI consultant Dr. Anita Sabat and recognition from both state and central governments, their efforts have finally borne fruit. The Part-B GI certificate validates their individual contributions and ensures their work is protected under intellectual property laws.

Economic & Cultural Impact

This certification is expected to significantly boost the artists’ visibility in national and international art exhibitions. It will also enhance the market value of their work, allowing them to earn better income and sustain their craft. As GI-certified creators, they can now showcase their art with pride and authenticity.

Global Identity for Local Art

Pattachitra, a traditional art form rooted in Odisha’s heritage, has long captivated audiences with its intricate designs and mythological themes. While the art itself had previously received GI recognition, this new certification acknowledges the individual artists who have preserved and innovated the craft. The GI tag ensures authenticity and protects the intellectual property rights of these creators.

Notably, Odisha’s traditional art forms, Pattachitra and Lanjia Saura, have earned GI certification for their cultural uniqueness. Pattachitra received the tag in 2008, while Lanjia was recognized in 2024. Artists creating in distinctive styles can obtain a Part-B GI certificate, boosting product visibility, authenticity, and increasing demand through wider recognition.
