Panic in Koraput: Unknown Disease Claims 5 Lives in 7 Days

Key Points

Five villagers have died in one week; 12 others are hospitalized with severe symptoms.

Medical teams suspect water contamination; samples collected for testing.

Villagers resort to traditional healing amid lack of official diagnosis.

Koraput, Aug 24: A wave of panic has gripped Odapur village in Dashamantapur block of Koraput district following the outbreak of a mysterious illness that has claimed five lives in just one week.

Twelve others, including children, are currently undergoing treatment at the Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput.

The symptoms reported include severe stomach pain, dizziness, vomiting, and disorientation. Villagers describe the situation as alarming, with multiple households affected. The first signs of illness appeared earlier this month, and the number of affected individuals has steadily increased.

On Sunday alone, five new patients were rushed to the hospital, adding to the seven already admitted. Tragically, two more deaths occurred over the weekend — one woman passed away at the medical college, while a man died at home under local treatment.

Medical teams from Dashamantapur CHC have arrived in Odapur to conduct health screenings and collect samples of water, food, and waste. Preliminary observations suggest the possibility of waterborne contamination, as the village lacks proper drinking water infrastructure and relies on nearby streams.

Despite the medical response, fear and superstition have taken hold. Some villagers have turned to traditional healers and rituals, hoping for relief. The district health department has yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the outbreak.

As the number of cases rises, health officials are urging residents to boil water before consumption and maintain hygiene. The administration is expected to intensify its investigation and awareness efforts in the coming days.

The outbreak highlights the urgent need for improved rural healthcare infrastructure and swift disease surveillance to prevent further loss of life.
