Bhubaneswar: In a major boost for Odisha's coastal economy, the Union Cabinet has approved the construction of a new 160-km coastal highway from Rameshwar near Puri to Paradip at an investment of Rs 8,300.79 crore. While the project is being projected as a strategic infrastructure initiative, its biggest impact will be felt by ordinary people living across Khurda, Puri, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur districts.

For lakhs of residents, fishermen, farmers, traders, tourists and daily commuters, the new coastal corridor promises faster travel, better access to markets, new employment opportunities and improved economic prospects.

A Journey That Will Become 2.5 Hours Shorter

One of the most immediate benefits for people will be a dramatic reduction in travel time. The new highway is expected to cut travel between Rameshwar and Paradip by nearly two and a half hours.

At present, travellers heading from Puri towards Konark, Astarang, Kendrapada or Paradip often face congestion, narrow road stretches and heavy local traffic. The new access-controlled corridor, designed for speeds up to 100 km per hour, is expected to provide smoother and safer movement for both passengers and goods vehicles.

For students, office-goers, tourists and transport operators, this means less time on the road and lower travel costs.

Big Relief for Fishermen and Coastal Businesses

The project is expected to be a game changer for Odisha's fishing communities.

Paradip, Konark, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Kendrapada are major fishing clusters. Faster connectivity will help fishermen transport fresh catch to markets more quickly, reducing spoilage and increasing earnings.

Seafood exporters and cold-chain operators are also expected to benefit as access to ports and processing centres improves significantly.

Better Prices for Farmers

Farmers in coastal Odisha often face challenges in transporting produce to major markets.

The highway will strengthen connectivity with food processing centres, logistics hubs and urban consumption markets. Reduced transport time can help farmers get better prices while lowering post-harvest losses.

Agricultural produce, vegetables, fruits and fisheries products can move more efficiently across the state and beyond.

Tourism Economy Gets a Massive Push

The corridor links some of Odisha's biggest tourism destinations including Puri, Konark and the scenic coastal belt stretching towards Astarang.

Tourism operators believe easier road access could encourage more domestic and international visitors to explore lesser-known beach destinations along the coast.

Hotels, homestays, restaurants, handicraft sellers and transport providers are likely to see increased business as tourist footfall grows.

Over 1.2 Crore Man-Days of Employment

The project is expected to generate nearly 53.61 lakh direct man-days and 67.01 lakh indirect man-days of employment during construction and allied activities.

This translates into significant opportunities for local workers, contractors, equipment operators, transporters and small businesses over the next several years.

Stronger Link to Ports and Economic Hubs

The new corridor will connect nine economic nodes and five major logistics hubs, including Puri Railway Station, the proposed Puri Airport, Astarang Port, Paradip Port and the Multi-Modal Logistics Park at Jagatsinghpur.

For industries, exporters and entrepreneurs, improved connectivity can reduce logistics costs and attract fresh investments into the coastal region.

Environmental and Fuel Savings

The Cabinet has highlighted that the highway will reduce fuel consumption, vehicle operating costs and carbon emissions.

For ordinary motorists and transport operators, this translates into lower fuel bills and reduced wear and tear on vehicles, offering long-term economic savings.

More Than a Road

Beyond concrete and asphalt, the Rameshwar-Paradip Coastal Highway is being viewed as a development corridor for Odisha's coastal districts. By improving access to jobs, markets, ports and tourist destinations, the project has the potential to reshape economic activity across the state's coastline and bring tangible benefits to millions of residents over the coming decade.
