Odisha’s Greenfield Airport In Puri Inches Closer To Reality

Key Points
A crucial environmental assessment and land acquisition process are underway for Odisha’s Greenfield Airport.
Puri, Apr 7: The development of Odisha’s Greenfield Airport in Puri’s Sipasarubali Mouza is making steady progress as the Centre’s Environment Ministry initiates a detailed review process.
A four-member expert team visited the site on April 5 to evaluate the environmental impact, including forest land requirements, biodiversity concerns, and ecological repercussions.
According to government sources, the upcoming airport will require 1,164 acres of land, of which 68 acres are forest land. The Environment Ministry’s approval is critical before major construction activities can commence. The site visit and discussions have focused on safeguarding biodiversity while ensuring minimal displacement of local residents.
Public hearings under Section 16 regarding rehabilitation and resettlement plans are scheduled for April 9 and 11 in Sipasarubali and Sandhapur Mouza. The state government has assured compensation and relocation support for affected residents under its rehabilitation policy.
Meanwhile, acquisition of 221 acres of private land has already begun, demonstrating the state’s commitment to bringing this ambitious infrastructure project to life.
The airport is expected to boost tourism, enhance connectivity, and create new economic opportunities in Odisha, particularly benefiting the temple town of Puri.
With procedural formalities underway, the Greenfield Airport project promises to be a transformative development, balancing growth with ecological sustainability.
