Key Points

Odisha marked World Forest Day with CM Mohan Charan Majhi highlighting the state’s leadership in forest conservation, eco-restoration, and urban greening, pledging sustainable growth through community participation.
Bhubaneswar, Mar 21: Odisha celebrated World Forest Day with a state-level event at the Lok Seva Convention Centre, where Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasized the state’s pioneering role in forest conservation and environmental protection.

Speaking as the chief guest, CM Majhi highlighted Odisha’s remarkable achievement of maintaining over 37% forest and tree cover of its geographical area—well above the national average. He proudly noted that in the past two years alone, Odisha has added more than 550 square kilometers of forest cover, a feat that strengthens its reputation as a green leader.

The Chief Minister credited community participation for this success, citing the popular campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” which has seen millions of trees planted across the state. He stressed that forests are not merely natural resources but the foundation of life, economy, and future sustainability. “With collective participation, we are committed to building a healthy and prosperous Odisha,” Majhi said.

The government has introduced several forward-looking policies, including a Natural Species-Based Eco-Restoration Policy, an Urban Greening Policy, livelihood initiatives through Kalinga Herbs, and an Integrated Command Centre for forest monitoring. These measures aim to balance environment, economy, and society while tackling climate change challenges.

Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia also addressed the gathering, underscoring Odisha’s leadership in wildlife protection, livelihood enhancement, and fire management. He revealed that over 16,000 forest protection committees and 20 lakh families are actively engaged in conservation efforts. In the past two years, 558 square kilometers of afforestation have been achieved, setting national records.

Khuntia further noted Odisha’s success in controlling forest fires through modern technology and rapid response systems, making the state a model for others.

Chief Secretary Anu Garg and senior officials were also present, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable development. The event concluded with a call to adopt eco-friendly practices, including the use of clay utensils and forest-based products, to reduce environmental impact.

Odisha’s World Forest Day celebration not only showcased its achievements but also reaffirmed its vision of a greener, more sustainable future.
