Berhampur, June 16: Police detained seven persons for alleged gang-rape of a young woman at Gopalpur sea beach in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Monday.

According to the information, the woman had visited the beach with a male friend. It is alleged that a group of men overpowered and tied up her companion before committing the assault.

The woman lodged an FIR filed at Gopalpur Police Station in this connection.

Police acted swiftly on the complaint and detained seven individuals in connection with the incident. A medical examination of the victim has been initiated as part of the investigation procedure, police said.

“Investigations are going on, strict legal action will be taken against the culprits,” a senior Police Officer said.

The case has raised concerns about women’s safety in public spaces, especially tourist locations in the State.
