Odisha Weather Alert: Kalbaisakhi Rains to Persist for Four More Days

Key Points
Kalbaisakhi rains bring relief and warnings as Odisha prepares for weather turbulence.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 19: The Regional Meteorological Department has announced that Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) rains in Odisha are likely to continue for another four days, bringing substantial weather changes after April 24. Currently, low-pressure systems are active over the state, causing widespread rainfall.
A heavy rainfall alert has been issued for nine districts in Odisha for the next 24 hours, including Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Keonjhar, Ganjam, Gajapati, Nabarangpur, Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri. These areas are under an orange warning due to possible extreme and very heavy rainfall coupled with winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 km/h.
Meanwhile, 10 other districts — Sundargarh, Angul, Jajpur, Dhenkanal, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal — are also expected to witness heavy rainfall in some areas. The department has issued a yellow warning for these locations.
Residents are advised to remain cautious, particularly during peak rainfall periods, as strong winds and lightning are likely to accompany the showers. The government has asked people to avoid venturing into open areas during the rainstorm and follow safety protocols.
The Kalbaisakhi rains, characteristic of pre-monsoon weather patterns, are expected to bring relief from the heat while also creating challenging conditions for those in affected areas. With improved forecasts post-April 24, the state looks forward to more settled weather.
