Vigilance Trap / Odisha Vigilance Nabs Sundargarh Traffic Inspector for Rs20,000 Bribe

Sundargarh, Aug 3: Odisha Vigilance officials on Monday apprehended Mukesh Kumar Mishra, Traffic Inspector of Odisha Motor Vehicle Department (OMVD) posted at the Office of RTO, Sundargarh, while accepting a bribe of Rs20,000 from a truck owner, officials said on Monday.

According to vigilance sources, Mishra had been demanding monthly payments from the complainant to allow his two HYVA trucks to operate without obstruction under his jurisdiction. For the months of June and July 2026, he allegedly sought Rs20,000 as a “quota” to ensure smooth transport operations. Unable to meet the repeated demands, the truck owner reported the matter to vigilance authorities.

Acting on the complaint, a team of Odisha Vigilance laid a trap and caught Mishra red-handed while receiving the bribe money. The entire tainted amount was recovered from his possession and seized as evidence.

Following the trap, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to Mishra to investigate disproportionate assets. Officials said that searches are continuing and further details will be shared once the investigation progresses.

In connection with the incident, Rourkela Vigilance Police Station registered Case No. 06 dated August 2, 2026, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of Mishra’s involvement and whether other officials or associates were part of the bribery network.

The vigilance department reiterated its commitment to curb corruption in public offices, particularly in transport and enforcement agencies where illegal gratification often hampers fair business practices. The arrest has sent a strong message against corrupt practices in regulatory offices, which directly affect transport operators and the logistics sector.
